We want to showcase ideas from across the southwest Arkansas region through guest bloggers. Today's Friend Friday post comes from Shirley Potts, mother of three, primary school teacher, and 2006 graduate of UAHT. This post was originally delivered as a speech to an "EDGE" freshman orientation class and covers overcoming obstacles to higher education, how UAHT helped her succeed, and the benefits of earning a college degree.
Reasons You Should NOT Go To College
Do you continue to find reasons why college is not a possibility for you? Those reasons are nonsense and are, in many cases, just excuses. Below are six top excuses people use for not going to college along with how the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana eliminates those excuses.
I can’t afford it. U of A Hope-Texarkana (UAHT) has the most affordable tuition in the State of Arkansas. The college also offers Bowie and Cass County residents the same affordable in-state tuition rate. Along with affordable tuition, UAHT offers a textbook rental program where students can rent college textbooks for only $20 per credit hour. The UAHT Foundation offers students over 120 privately funded scholarships. There are also numerous financial aid opportunities, institutional scholarships, and work-study programs that are available for students. In fact, over 80% of students at UAHT qualify for some type of financial aid. UAHT even offers the U Can Scholarship which may qualify you to take a free 3-hour course.
Nobody in my family has ever graduated from college. If no one in your family has attempted or completed college, it can be very intimidating to be the first. Every family needs a trailblazer. Last year, 68% of UAHT students were first-generation college students. Sometimes the only things stopping you are the obstacles you have placed in your way and the lack of confidence you have in yourself. You will find that as you start to go through the process of earning your degree that everyone at UAHT believes in you. Be the first to earn a degree in your family and you will inspire many others to do the same. The advisors, counselors, and faculty at UAHT are here to help and guide you from registration to graduation and once you receive your diploma, you’ll be a part of the University of Arkansas System family.
I don’t know what to major in or what I want to do for the rest of my life. To be honest, most people who start their college educations say the same thing. Many have an idea of what they’d like to do as a career, but most aren’t 100% sure. The important thing is to get started. With over 50 certificate and degree programs to choose from, UAHT has one that is right for you. Earning a degree or certificate will ultimately enhance your future income. According to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, a person with a bachelor’s degree will make almost one million dollars more in lifetime earnings than a person with a high school diploma.
College is too hard for me. College takes hard work and dedication, and UAHT offers many services to help students succeed. UAHT offers academic counselors, student services, and tutoring programs that are solely to help students succeed. The college also offers an “EDGE” freshman orientation class that teaches students how to study, improve memory, and teaches test preparation and test-taking strategies. With hard work, discipline and taking advantage of resources to help them succeed, college students can overcome the challenges that face them.
I don’t have time because of work or other responsibilities. The traditional view of higher education has changed drastically over the years. With the availability of online, hybrid, and evening classes at UAHT, students can earn certificates and degrees through a variety of avenues. These avenues have removed the viability of the excuse that getting a degree is not possible while work, family or other priorities are in the picture. UAHT offers programs that can qualify students for good jobs in as little as one semester. UAHT even offers campuses in two locations, Hope and Texarkana, Arkansas. Now students can earn a degree around their busy schedules.
I won’t fit in. UAHT has a diverse student body. The average age at UAHT is over 23, and students up to the age of 83 have completed courses. The college offers multiple student organizations and events in which students can become involved. Even online courses provide ways for students to connect and feel involved as part of the class and the school. The faculty, staff, and students at UAHT are friendly and helpful, creating an excellent atmosphere for making new friends.
So do you still think college isn't possible for you? You don't have to have a lot of money to go to college. You don't have to have straight "A's" in high school or know what you want to do with the rest of your life. You don’t have to quit your job or sacrifice time with family. You do have to want to go to college. If you want to go to college, you can at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana.
