Meet the Team Mondays
Every Monday for the next several weeks we will be showcasing the amazing team at Hempstead Hall. We want to know you better, so we thought we'd get the conversation started by sharing a little about us. Tune in each Monday to see a different team member's answers and get to know The Hall a little better.
John Gladden, Assistant Director of Hempstead Hall
Family: My wife Julie and daughter Annie Jo keep life entertaining. Julie is the Band Director at Hope Public Schools and Annie Jo keeps us going with her love of all things Disney ("Let it Go" is steadily on repeat).
Hobbies: Reading, Computer Gaming, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS!
Favorite place to go in Hempstead County: Tailgaters. They were named Best Burger in Arkansas for a REASON!
Favorite place to go in the region: Osaka’s in Texarkana
Favorite Quote: “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” – Bilbo Baggins
Event you’re most looking forward to at the Hall: We have TEDxUAHT coming up April 4, and I’m really excited about that. These talks really aim to make a difference not just on the local level, but on a global stage. They’re ambitious, in the best kind of way.
Describe your job in your own words: I assist our clients with their reservations, and provide a professional level of service for all events, large and small. I lead a superb team of student workers, who help with the daily logistics of the Hall.
Best part of working at UAHT: The people! I know, I know, it sounds like something that I’m expected to say. I could tell you that the healthcare plan is the best thing, or the benefits package. Maybe the best part is getting to meet all of the bands that have come through. And all those things are great, but they don’t mean anything if you don’t have a good team. But those things ARE great, and they’re made better BECAUSE we have a great team here at UAHT.
One goal for our region: To spread the word about what we do here at Hempstead Hall. Most people think we’re just a concert venue, but the majority of what we do is host industry trainings, a variety of expos, business conferences, class reunions, and much more! Even as I’m writing this, we’re in day two of the spring FBLA Conferences, where we’ll see an average of 1,400 local middle- and high-school students come through our doors!
Favorite musical artist: Okay, so this is kind of a tough choice. I grew up in the 90s, but I’m a big fan of classic rock. There were so many bands that came from those time periods, and I don’t think I can pick just one. So, here are some of my favorites, in no particular order: Journey, Aerosmith, The Eagles, Hootie and the Blowfish, Matchbox Twenty, Blues Traveler, Queen, and Van Halen.
Favorite movie: Again, I don’t know that I can narrow this down to just one. Here’s another list for your perusal and consideration: The Princess Bride, Kelly’s Heroes, The Great Race, The Great Escape, Interstellar, The Martian, Back to the Future, Good Will Hunting, and Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country.
Who is your hero (real or super): I have one of each, and they might surprise you. I’m not telling you here, though. You’ll have to catch me to find out!
People would be surprised that I: …can’t eat apple sauce without putting cheddar cheese (of the extra sharp variety) in it. I’m not ashamed…
